The McLaughlin neighbourhood is located in the central west part of Oshawa, just minutes away from Oshawa’s downtown core. It is sandwiched between King Street to its south and Rossland Road to its north. McLaughlin’s western border runs just west of Thornton Road, runs along the border of Oshawa’s city limits, with Oshawa Creek running along its eastern edge.
In McLaughlin you will find affordable detached homes in a variety of styles, as well as some townhomes. The neighborhood is dotted especially with bungalows, while also having some two-storey and backsplit and sidesplit homes.
The McLaughlin neighbourhood is almost a snapshot of the best that Oshawa has to offer. The area is named after Oshawa’s most famous resident, Colonel R.S. ‘Sam’ McLaughlin. McLaughlin, originally a native of nearby Clarington, started manufacturing cars in Canada over a century ago and later became president and chairman of General Motors Canada. While McLaughlin’s nearby estate is one of Oshawa’s main tourist attractions, his final resting place is in Union Cemetery in the southwest corner of the McLaughlin neighbourhood.
Life in McLaughlin offers the best of suburban splendour. The neighbourhood features numerous parks that offer an open invitation for outdoor activities year-round. When the sun is shining, a trip to the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens located in the southeast corner of McLaughlin, which offers 11 masterfully planned gardens and a beautiful collection of new flowers each week in the summer.
McLaughlin is bordered on its south end by Oshawa’s major east-west road, Highway 2 (here King Street), so it provides easy access to downtown Oshawa as well as neighbouring communities. Other Oshawa attractions such as the Oshawa Centre or Tribute Communities Centre are just down the road. For the best of local fare, Teddy’s Restaurant and Deli, located on King Street in the south end of McLaughlin, is an Oshawa staple that has featured line-ups around the building for nearly four decades.
