According to the 2016 Canadian Census, Oshawa has a population of around 159,458 people. This ever growing city is attracting many that commute to Toronto as it is about 60% less expensive than its counterpart. City Highlights

Oshawa has the benefit of being nestled along the north shore of Lake Ontario, and as such enjoys the perks of being a lakeshore community. That means residents and visitors alike can take advantage of the beautiful shoreline, scenic trails and a plethora of parks and nature. 

In Oshawa, there are 130 parks, which means no matter where you decide to call home in the city you will never be far away from one. Kids play equipment, splash pads, trails, gazebos and wildlife is available all around the city. 

Baker Park is located in the Eastdale area and offers children’s play equipment, a gazebo and the Baker Park splash pad. A fun and easily accessible park where you can spend the day with the kids and cool off in the splash park. 

Deer Valley Sports Park is set in the Northglen neighbourhood and offers play structures and a sports field. 

Oshawa has 4 sets of trails that can be walked, jogged or biked along. Harmony Creek trail is a 4km paved, multi-use trail that runs along Harmony Creek. While walking you will enjoy lush nature and have access to other trails such as Joseph Kolodzie Oshawa Creek Bike Path and the Michael Starr Trail. There is also access to the Donevan Recreation Complex and a number of parks including Farewell Park and Eastbourne Park.

Due to its location, Oshawa also has part of the Waterfront trail which is a 1,400 km trail that runs along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and the Niagara, Detroit, and St. Lawrence Rivers. Oshawa's section of the trail is 11 km and travels along the shore of Lake Ontario. Along Oshawa’s portion of the trail, you will have access to Lakeview Park, Lakefront West Park, Renaissance Park, Stone Street Park, Pumphouse Marsh, and Second Marsh.

Buying and supporting local has never been easier in Oshawa. There is a handful of farmers markets that are hosted throughout the city that will give you access to locally grown foods and artisan crafts and products. Some of the farmer's markets include North Oshawa Farmers Market, Oshawa Centre Farmers Market, and White Feather Country Store. 

The City of Oshawa puts on a number of events throughout the year for its communities. Residents can attend events and festivals such as the Canada Day Celebration held at Lakeview Park. Attendees can enjoy live music, delicious food, vendors and kids activities. 

Oshawa also has one of Canada's largest contemporary peony collections and proudly displays it each year at the Peony Festival. With over 300 varieties in the garden, you’ll spend a beautiful day enjoying the flowers, listening to live music, tasting the food and it even has wine! It was also awarded Top 100 Festival and Event in Ontario for seven years in a row!

 The Best Oshawa Neighbourhoods

The Lakeview area of Oshawa has mostly detached homes available that were built pre-1980. The average income in the area is approximately $63,000/year. The neighbourhood has many amenities surrounding it such as parks, schools, a branch of the Oshawa Library, an indoor pool, arena, conservation area, the hospital and easy access to the GO station. These are just a few of the reasons it is a desired area to live in. It is also located in close proximity to the lake making for beautiful scenery. 

Vanier is situated along the Oshawa/Whitby city lines and provides residents with easy access to the 401, which is beneficial to those who commute. According to zolo.ca, this neighbourhood is one of the hotter areas in Oshawa in terms of real estate. Houses are selling around $350K, and only lasting about 15 days on the market. The Oshawa Center is in the area, which is a two-story shopping complex. This mall is the largest in the Durham region with over 230 retail stores and public services. 

Taunton is a luxury neighbourhood in the North East side of Oshawa. The housing prices are well above the city’s average, coming in around $710K. The large homes, in a quiet and mature neighbourhood draw many to the area. There is also parks, schools and a branch of the Oshawa Library. 

The neighbourhood of McLaughlin is one of the most popular in the city. The houses fall in an affordable amount of approximately $480K. The area is central to all necessities, easy access to the major highways and is a safe and family friendly area. Schools, restaurants, shopping, the Oshawa Centre Mall and the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club are all just around the corner. 

 

Amenities

There are a number of attractions in the city that will ensure that there is always a fun and exciting way to spend the day. Oshawa’s downtown has been identified as an urban growth centre in the Government of Ontario’s “Places to Grow Initiative”, which means that there are plenty of amenities and businesses that offer everything one could need in. 

The Tribute Community Centre is a large multi-purpose arena located in the downtown core of Oshawa. It houses the Oshawa Generals, a hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League. It also plays host to a number of different events, concerts, and shows where it can hold up to 7,300 attendees.

The City of Oshawa has 4 branches of their public library at different points in the city to ensure easy access to knowledge and programs.  Oshawa School Guide

Public education in the City of Oshawa is provided by the Durham District School Board. The Board currently records 28 Elementary School and 6 Secondary Schools in Oshawa that residents can send their children to. 

The Durham Catholic School Board not only has its headquarters in Oshawa, there is also 10 Elementary School and 2 Catholic High Schools. 

French Immersion is offered by Conseil Scolaire Viamonde Operatis. There is one public french language school. The Conseil Scolaire de district Catholique Centre-sud also has one Catholic French language school. 

For alternative education, there are a few private schools in Oshawa as well, namely, Durham Elementary School, Immanuel Christian School, Kingsway College, and College Park Elementary School. 

Oshawa is home to a variety of post-secondary schooling options. Durham College, Trent University and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology are all located in Oshawa. Also, the Lakeridge Health Education and Research Network (LHERN) in association with Lakeridge Health Oshawa have their campus in the city. 

Between the many elementary, secondary and postsecondary education institutes the residents of Oshawa and those who come to further their studies have access to top-notch education at well-ranked schools. Once regarded as the “Automotive Capital of Canada”, today, Oshawa, is an education and health science hub. 

 

Transportation

Transportation in the City of Oshawa is provided by the Durham Region Transit. 

The GO transit buses offer service from Oshawa along the Highway 401 and Highway 2 corridors in Durham Region and to Toronto and York Region. GO Transit bus service is also provided from Oshawa Train station to Clarington and Peterborough via the downtown bus terminal. 

The Oshawa GO Station is located on Bloor Street and is the station for commuter rail, passenger rail and the regional buses that service Oshawa. They provide quick and efficient access to surrounding GTA cities and Downtown Toronto. 

For those who commute by car, there is easy access to the 401, which was extended directly through the City of Oshawa. There is also now a convenient access to the 407 via a North-South connector, Highway 412. All these in efforts to make the commute in and out of the city as effortless as possible.
