Living In Windfields, Oshawa

The Windfields neighbourhood occupies some of Oshawa’s proudest heritage. 

Windfields Farm was opened by Colonel R.S. McLaughlin (of GM Canada fame) in 1927 as Parkwood Stables. While McLaughlin used the land for his show horses, it came to fame after it was sold to E.P. Taylor and became Windfields Farm. From the 1960s through the 1980s, Windfields Farm bred the leading race and show horses in North America, including Northern Dancer, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby.

Ontario Tech University has now taken over much of the former Windfields Farm, and the rest of the property has developed into residential real estate in the neighbourhood. Some landmarks from the Farm’s glory days still stand though, including the Farm’s house, built in the 1850s and located just north of the University campus on Simcoe Street. There has been pressure on the City of Oshawa in recent years to do more to honour the Farm’s legacy, so the neighbourhood will likely receive increased attention as residential development continues.

While Windfields’ new residential developments may be perfect for families, its proximity to campus cannot be ignored. Ontario Tech University, Durham College, and Trent University’s Oshawa Campus offer hands-on training to thousands of Durham students each year, and those students make amazing efforts to give back to the community. For example, Durham College’s Centre for Collaborative Education, located just steps from Windfields’ southern border, offers training for entrepreneurial students to grow their community-based small businesses, many of which directly benefit the local residents.

Windfields is home to a rich piece of Oshawa’s history, but new real estate developments and the nearby student population are sure to bring the neighbourhood tremendous growth and opportunity in the years to come.

There are currently no elementary or secondary schools located in Windfields but there are plenty in nearby neighborhoods. As the residential community continues to grow, so will the need for more education infrastructure.
