Vanier is a neighbourhood located in the southwest of downtown Oshawa, bordered by King Street to the north and the 401 to the south. Vanier is bordered to the east by Oshawa Creek, and the western edge runs alongside Oshawa’s western border with Whitby. The southern boundary of the neighbourhood is blocks from the Oshawa GO station, and the 401’s Stevenson onramp lies within the neighbourhood’s boundaries.
Like much of downtown Oshawa, in Vanier you will find plenty of affordable housing options, types, and styles. From condo-townhouses, semi-detached, and detached, this easily accessible neighborhood has a variety of options to fit your needs.
Vanier can easily be considered a neighbourhood of convenience, because it holds so many of Oshawa’s greatest conveniences within its borders.
The first is for commuters, who are a fast growing population in the city. The Oshawa GO station is located just south of the 401, mere minutes from any location in Vanier. While further stations are set to open in the coming years, the GO station (which also services VIA rail) is a popular morning destination for commuters making their way into Toronto offices. Express trains arrive at Union Station usually in just over 45 minutes, and being the last stop on the line often guarantees Oshawa’s bleary-eyed commuters a seat on the train.
Vanier is also home to one of Oshawa’s best-known shopping destinations – the Oshawa Centre. Originally opened as a small shopping centre in 1956 with just 28 stores, the mall has grown tremendously over the years to meet Durham Region’s shopping needs. In 2013, the Oshawa Centre underwent a 200-million dollar renovation, and now features 260 stores, as well as a food court that holds 1,000 hungry shoppers. The mall features a mix of high-end retail and local vendors, such as placing a favourite local bakery steps from a major bookstore. If the Oshawa Centre doesn’t have what you’re looking for, grocery stores, home improvement stores, fashion retailers, and other major shopping are only a short drive away.
Vanier may be perfect for commuters, but anything you would ever need is just down the street.
