City Highlights and AttractionsMuch like its fellow lakefront towns, Whitby has numerous parks and trails for residents and visitors to enjoy. There is over 60 km of trails throughout Whitby, Ash Creek Channel Trail, Iroquois Trail, and Whitby Shores Waterfront Trail. Having 10.6 km of waterfront trails that can be enjoyed by walking or cycling along. Make sure to stop along the path at a scenic natural area such as Lynde Shore Conservation Area or Thickson's Woods.
The town of Whitby maintains 125 parks throughout the year, which boasts 950 acres of active parkland and over 1000 acres of passive open spaces and beaches. A notable park is Baycliffe Park, dubbed “rocketship park” after its rocket ship climbing structure. Cool off at the splash pad, enjoy the basketball court or soccer field or take advantage of the jogging trail.

Located north of the downtown area, Brooklin is a rural community near the highway 12 and highway 7 junction. In 2013, approximately 20,000 residents of Whitby were located in the Brooklin area, and due to the increased demand in the area thousands of homes have been built since the 90’s. Whitby newest recreational facility is the Brooklin Community Centre and Library. The town is home to Canada’s largest municipally owned and operated recreation facility. The Iroquois Park Sports Centre (IPSC) is a 250,000 square foot facility that houses 6 arenas, 2 pools, a fully licensed restaurant, food court, elite athletic training facility, banquet halls, and meeting rooms. Outside, there are 6 illuminated tennis courts, 3 illuminated tournament-quality baseball diamonds, another two unlit ball diamonds, and a fully lit tournament quality soccer pitch.
Whitby School GuidePublic education is provided by the Durham District School Board in Whitby, also having their headquarters located in the town as well. There are 24 Elementary schools and 5 Secondary Schools scattered throughout the area.
The Catholic School Board, Durham District Catholic School Board, provides education out of 12 Elementary Schools and 2 Secondary Schools.
For those interested in full french education, the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir offers one Elementary School, École élémentaire catholique Jean-Paul II (JK-grade 6) and one Secondary SChool, École secondaire catholique St-Charles Garnier (grades 7-12) which services all of Durham.
Whitby is also home to the internationally known independent day and boarding school, Trafalgar Castle. This educational establishment provides offers a university pre-programme for grades 5 - grade 12 at a woman's only facility.
Alternative education is also available at a number of different locations around Whitby in the private and Montessori sectors of education.
Transportation in the Durham RegionAlso governed by the Durham Transit Authority, Whitby's inner-city transportation is provided by way of city buses, offering stops and access to all areas of town. Standard transit is available on a large number of city buses as well as paratransit services for those requiring extra assistance.
The GO train systems also run through Whitby allowing for quick transportation on the east to west axis. For those needing to commute the GO train system offers easy and convenient travel to Toronto and surrounding areas of the GTA.
For drivers, there are access points to the major highways 401 and 407 with the 412 connecting the two.
