The affordability in Ajax is a large contributing factor for why the town is the second-fastest growing in the GTA. Bungalows are one of the key housing types that you can purchase that is leading this population growth. There are usually several different types and styles of bungalows on the market at any given time.
Bungalow: the most traditional and common type is also known as a “standard” bungalow and comes in a variety of price points from standard neighborhood homes in urban areas to luxury properties on many acres of land in more rural communities in north Ajax.
A bungalow in this style is a detached dwelling on one-storey with a basement and a large backyard. Sometimes homes like this have attached garages or carports with large driveways. Bungalows of this type usually come with two or three bedrooms (and sometimes more) on the main level, and two full bathrooms. You typically find one bathroom on the main floor and another bathroom in the basement, along with another one, two, and sometimes three bedrooms in the basement. This type of bungalow is usually situated on large lots and is built with a separate side entrance. Sometimes there are two kitchens (one on the main floor and the other in the basement). Because the basement space is usually identical to the main floor, basements in bungalows have big living rooms as well. This type of bungalow is ideal for families looking for enough space on the main floor while also being able to have lots of storage space in the basement. Sometimes homeowners of bungalows take on a basement tenant to help pay part of their mortgage and other expenses. Due to having two kitchens, living areas, separate laundry facilities, and separate entrances, this type of housing can be very attractive for real estate investors and landlords.
Bungaloft: this type of bungalow is similar to a standard bungalow with the addition of a loft space. The loft space is an additional level but typically does not span the whole house. Most commonly the loft space is accessed by stairs and sometimes a ladder and is used as an additional bedroom or office. If designed well, it can add a touch of grandeur and elegance to a bungalow. Two, three, and four-bedroom configurations are the most commonly found bungalofts in Ajax.
Semi-detached bungalow: a semi-detached house (or semi for short) is another type of bungalow similar to the standard bungalow but with one major exception: it shares a common wall with a neighbor. In Ajax, semi-detached bungalows sometimes have an open concept backyard with no fence but sometimes neighbors elect to put up a fence along the property line for privacy. This style of bungalow can also have a separate entrance to the basement, two kitchens etc. Sometimes semi-bungalow lot sizes are smaller than your standard bungalow, but they also are more affordable without sacrificing space.
Raised bungalow: a raised bungalow is a type of bungalow, usually detached, that is built with the basement partially above ground. While the standard bungalow has the basement completely underground, raised bungalows are more generally filled with light and have direct access to a large backyard. These basements are used by end-users as additional living room or recreation space, and are desirable for tenants due to the abundance of natural light giving the impression of a more house-like feel without the hefty monthly rental rate of renting the upstairs level, or the whole home.
